“SDR” reveals images of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks (Dui Inthanon, Chiang Mai).

On March 12, 2024, the Facebook page of NARIT, the National Institute for Astronomical Research, posted an image with a message stating…

The NARIT team captures images of comet 12P/Pons-Brooks to share with you, recorded in the early evening of March 11, 2024 in Doi Inthanon, Chom Thong District, Chiang Mai Province.

At this time, comets appeared in the early evening. After sunset, it is located in the constellation Andromeda on the western horizon. As the sun was setting on the horizon, the comet's elevation angle was only about 12 degrees, so it would not appear in the sky for long before it set behind the sun. In addition, there was pollution in the atmosphere. After that, there will be disturbances in the moonlight until March 27, 2024. They may be difficult to notice with the naked eye.

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks orbits close to the Sun and at the end of March it will gradually change its position and move to the constellation Ram (Aries) at the end of April. It will move towards the constellation Taurus and will be closest to the sun on April 23, 2024. It may become brighter until it can be seen with the naked eye in the sky at night. It is one of the comets worth monitoring at the beginning of this year.

12 B / Pons Brooks It is classified as a comet of the same type as Halley's comet (1P/Halley), which means that its orbital period is 71 years around the sun, and therefore it is classified as a comet. “Periodic comets” were first discovered by French astronomer Jean-Louis Pons in 1812 and rediscovered in 1883 by American astronomer William Robert Brooks. Hence the origin of the comet's name. 12b/ponce brooks
