At least two people have died in central Spain after Storm Dana battered the country with torrential rains.

Spain’s Civil Guard told CNN on Monday that the two fatalities occurred near the city of Toledo, south of Madrid.

Police spokesman Ramon Cuevas said a man in his 20s died in the small town of Casarubios del Monte due to the devastating consequences of Storm Dana.

Cuevas added that another man was found dead in the town of Vargas.

The president of the Castilla-La Mancha region, hardest hit by the storm, described its impact on Sunday as “very strong and aggressive”.

Pictures showed overturned cars and destroyed property in central Spain on Monday.

Garcia-Page said that during Sunday’s events, the emergency services were unable to remove the water on several occasions because they prioritized saving trapped people, which “shows how much water fell and how quickly that happened.”

Emiliano Garcia Page said the government of La Mancha would analyze the affected areas. He praised the emergency services for their “great” work, reminding listeners that despite the death in Casarubios del Monte, we must also “count the scores of people who have been saved”.

Spanish authorities also said that a woman aged at least 55 was reported missing in the municipality of Valmogado, while two others are missing in the Madrid region.

According to CNN Weather, rain will continue Monday in central parts of Spain, including its capital, Madrid, but it won’t be as extensive as Sunday and the amounts will be less although the downpours could be heavy where they do occur.

Dry weather is expected to return across most of the country on Tuesday.

City authorities had instructed Madrid residents to stay indoors on Sunday, when storm Dana was due to hit.

The state meteorological agency, AEMET, issued a warning for Madrid, Toledo and Cadiz, initially forecasting up to 120 liters per square meter of rain to fall on Madrid within 12 hours.

AEMAT said that Valencia, located on the Mediterranean coast, had earlier already seen heavy rains.
