Previews for Spider-Man 2 are starting to drop, and surprisingly, the sequel to a really good game is also shaping up to be really good. A much larger map including more New York City, two interchangeable Spider-Men, and new symbiote powers.
But the craziest thing I’ve seen from all these previews is actually… Mike Fitzgeralddirector of core technology at Insomniac shared how fast travel now feels in the game, a far cry from the “Spider-Man on the subway” transitions from the last game.
This uh, what… just happened? I need to watch this about fifty more times (which I have). Convert the map to the actual city where Spidey actually swings/web-flies? I’ve really never seen anything like this before. Some are using this as “PS5 power!” Evidence, though I’m not sure if that’s the case or just an Insomniac object To the fullest extent Smart with their technology.
The general sentiment of the previews is “It’s Spider-Man 1 but more impressive and expansive,” at least from the preview’s limited runtime. We’ve seen footage circulating of a boss battle with the Lizard that looks pretty wild:
I’ve said before that Spider-Man 2 is a very important game for the PS5, even if the hype around it is somewhat muted due to, uh, like 12 other great games coming out in the last few months. Spider-Man 1 was the best-selling exclusive of the PS4 generation, and as such, Sony no doubt has high hopes for Spider-Man 2.
So far, it looks like all the pieces are in place for the game to deliver as expected. Insomniac has become one of the most powerful development companies in the industry, delivering innovative and highly impressive games with little to no lag. No wonder Sony made them work on three or more projects at once.
Spider-Man 2 is Sony’s biggest game of the year, even if Starfield has sucked all the oxygen out of the room lately with eternal debates about its quality and whether it represents a new era for first-party gaming for Xbox. Of course, Sony has been in that era forever, really, and Insomniac has been leading the charge recently with both Spider-Man 1 and Ratchet and Clank. I have to believe that Spider-Man 2 will maintain its high quality bar, and then we can all turn our attention to what should be the crazy M-rated Wolverine game they’re working on next. now Which It will be something to see.
