- Applications are open until April 11 to win five grand prizes, each worth $30,000.
- This year's competition included the use of artificial intelligence models to stimulate development in the field of artificial intelligence.
The Alibaba Group Global Mathematics Competition is now open for applications. Math enthusiasts and software developers around the world are invited to compete in math challenges.
For all math fans, registration is open from now until early April on Alibaba's Damo Academy website, and contestants must pass the first round of competitions based on real math problems outside the classroom. Before entering the final round, they will be tested on five basic sports skills. All competitions are online.
For the first time, this year's competition included artificial intelligence models. An educational institution and all AI startups (regardless of field or experience) can participate in the competition. In the first round, they were able to apply any large linguistic model (LLM) to solve a mathematical problem in less than 48 hours.
A panel of judges will evaluate answers based on the innovation, logic and performance of those models used to solve mathematical problems, and the winner in the AI model track will receive a prize of $10,000.
The organizing committee of the Alibaba World Mathematics Competition said: “Including artificial intelligence in the competition creates a new perspective for the competition. It helps the public become more aware of AI's abilities to think logically and solve problems.
Applying AI models to solve complex mathematical problems remains challenging. This is because thinking skills are less effective. Because mathematics involves many steps of thinking and planning, most AI models are unable to solve mathematical problems at undergraduate or advanced level.
“It is possible that in the near future, artificial intelligence will have the ability to solve mathematical competition problems better than humans, and we will see early signs of that from this competition,” said Ivan Fesenko, a member of the steering committee of the Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition and a professor at the Institute of Theoretical Sciences at Westlake University.
Open to everyone
The competition, organized by the Alibaba Charitable Foundation and Alibaba Group's Damo Academy, has attracted more than 50,000 participants annually from more than 70 countries and regions in the six years since its launch.
Previous winners of the competition come from world-class academic institutions such as Peking University, Princeton, and MIT.
There are no application requirements or initial fees. Those interested can apply until April 11. The first round will take place from April 13 to 15, and the final round is scheduled to take place on June 22.
The top 5 scorers in the final round will receive gold medals. The grand prize is $30,000 each, ten silver medal winners will receive $15,000 each, and 20 bronze medal winners will receive $8,000 each.
Last year's competition had the youngest award winner scoring a perfect score. A second-year student from Peking University, he stood out from among 685 competitors from 19 countries.
