The Burmese government orders government officials to evacuate Lashio. Important cities in Shan State went to the city of Tongji but refused, and Lashio is still not broken as the opposition announced it was able to take over the northeastern leadership.
The Irrawaddy website English-language media in Burma or Myanmar reported that the Burmese military government, under the leadership of Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, ordered government officials to evacuate Lashio. The largest city in Shan State, the northern part of the country, after the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) of the Kokang group announced on Thursday, July 25, 2024, that it had captured the northeastern regional headquarters of the Burmese army. After coalition forces joined forces to attack on July 3.
The wife of a member of the Burmese military government's municipal office in the capital told The Irrawaddy that her husband had been ordered by the Naypyidaw government to migrate south to Taunggyi, the capital of Shan State. In mid-July, another Shan State Council member confirmed the same. Along with the statement, government officials in Shan State, including Lashio City, were ordered to evacuate to Taunggyi City.
The Irrawaddy also reported that the MNDAA or Kokang Army which was announced last Thursday to have taken over the Northeast Command is now also said to be clearing areas in the city, however, the State Peace and Development Council continues to deny the Kokang Army's claims that Lashio has fallen.
In addition, The Irrawaddy also reported that clashes took place between Burmese government soldiers and opposition groups in Lashio on July 26.
