Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 leaks and rumors all point to a larger cover display in the upcoming phone, and Alleged new offer posted by MySmartPrice trend continues. The image shows the Z Flip 5 with a nice big cover display, which is exactly what we want. And by us, I mean me personally. I want this.
The Galaxy Z Flip 4’s external screen is only 1.9 inches. It’s nice for checking the weather and reading notifications, but the small size limits the kinds of actions you can take with it, like writing replies to text messages. It’s also not ideal for framing selfies with external cameras—one of the advantages of a foldable phone—because the preview image is literally the size of a postage stamp. I made sure.
That seems poised to change with the Z Flip 5, and just in time: the Motorola Razr Plus is here, and it comes with a relatively gigantic 3.6-inch screen. In my short hands-on time previewing the device, I’ve used the screen to launch Google Maps, write texts, and even browse websites. It is infinitely more capable than a small screen.
It’s not just about the hardware. There are a lot of tricky software issues to solve with a large cover screen. Do you allow people to run any old app on it, even if it breaks the app’s functionality? How do you handle the transfer process between the big and small screen? What do you do about camera lenses? Samsung appears to be taking a different approach to Motorola on the latter, at least, by shaping the screen to avoid the cameras rather than flush all the way around them. It will be interesting to see how their approaches to these other software challenges differ as well.
