The number of “newlyweds” in South Korea will decrease in 2022

SEOUL, Dec. 11, 2019 (Xinhua) – South Korea’s National Bureau of Statistics issued a statement on Monday (Dec. 11). It has been revealed that the number of newlyweds in South Korea has continued to decline in 2022 as the slow marriage trend continues.

The number of legal couples in the five years to November 1, 2022 reached 1,032,253, a decrease of 6.3 percent from the previous year. This number has continued to decrease over the years from 1.47 million pairs in 2015 to 1.38 million pairs in 2017, followed by 1.26 million pairs in 2019 and 1.10 million pairs in 2021.

In addition, an increasing number of young people are delaying marriage or deciding not to marry due to economic problems such as rising housing prices. And unemployment of the new generation

The number of couples who married for the first time during the aforementioned five-year period was 815,357, or 79.0 percent of all newlyweds. At the same time, the number of second marriages reached 213,803 couples, or 20.7 percent.

Among first-time couples, 46.4% were childless in 2022, up 0.6 percentage points from the previous year. The average number of children born to newlywed couples will fall to 0.65 in 2022 from 0.66 the previous year.

In addition, among newlywed couples with both incomes, 50.2% have no children, which is higher than the percentage of couples with only one income and no children. It is 40.6 percent

As for newly married couples who have their own residence, 59.6% of them have their own home and have children. As for newly married couples who do not have a home or children, the percentage reached 49.5 percent.
