Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin simulates Starcraft with old school RTS tactics
Warhammer tabletop and strategy video games have had a long, sometimes fruitful, sometimes injurious relationship, and another crossover is on its way.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of RuinAn “updated take on the classic RTS” was announced during Thursday’s Warhammer Skulls presentation. Ruin worlds It will take place in the Kingdom of Algor, otherwise known as the World of Monsters. It is a “wild and savage” plane of existence that appeared after the destruction of Warhammer Fantasy Battle The wargame was set on the table in 2015. Its story is being penned in collaboration with Gavin Thorpe, a veteran designer at Games Workshop and author of a few books in the Black Library’s novel and graphic novel collection.
Like in “classic” RTS games like starcraftAnd command and conquerAnd Age of EmpiresAnd Ruin worlds It places a strong emphasis on controlling key map locations, gathering resources, and attacking enemy command posts from a bird’s eye view.
Frontier has four factions slated for release, of which only two have been revealed: the superpowered Stormcast Eternals, and the cunning Orruk Kruleboyz. During a recent presentation behind closed doors, Polygon watched part of the game’s second campaign mission, which featured a battle between the two factions. The player, commanding the Eternals, had access to the heroes Sigrun, Iden, and Demechrios, along with a diverse list of super units.
By capturing the “Mysterious Channels”, the player advances through the Eternals’ technology tree, unlocking increasingly powerful units (including Destroyers, Attorneys, and a Stormdrake guard), and defeating the Kruleboyz across the map. The fight seemed intense, albeit a little slow. Recent real-time strategy games have included a “tactical pause” option to increase accessibility without sacrificing sharpness, but it remains to be seen if Ruin worlds Will follow suit.
Frontier has not yet announced a release date Ruin worlds, or planned multiplayer beta release dates. This will be the studio’s first foray into the real-time strategy space, which, despite its low popularity since the “golden age” of mainstays in the early 20th century, has been on a hot streak in recent years.
