Our individual Game of the Year articles allow our awesome team of writers to share their personal PS5 and PS4 picks for 2022. Today, it’s the staff writer’s turn. Khayl Adam.
A remake of the classic SRPG, Tactics Ogre: Reborn stands like a giant above the genre, setting the gold standard for turn-based tactical combat when it was originally released and holding that honor for all these many years afterward. With a complex adult story of political intrigue, disparate story paths, and a choice of dozens of different classes to take onto the battlefield, Tactics Ogre: Reborn is quite in a league of its own.
Trails from Zero offers the kind of JRPG experience that reminds us why we fell in love with the genre in the first place. Featuring an engaging cast of deeply likable characters, an engaging and well-written narrative to get lost in, and a combat system that’s above the usual price tag, Trails from Zero offers a lesser-known adventure well worth delving into.
Mount & Blade: Banerlord is one of the most unique games on the PlayStation, a strategy sandbox experience masquerading as a medieval life management sim. It features incredibly large-scale battles and the kind of RPG progression that will keep you coming back again and again, giving PlayStation fans a sneak peek into the kind of experience usually only reserved for PC gamers.
God of War Ragnarok sets a new standard for cinematic gameplay experiences that, along with the game’s dynamic combat system, make Kratos’ latest adventure one of the year’s most memorable. With a level of production nearly unparalleled even within Sony’s array of first-party studios, Ragnarok is a shiny new gem in PlayStation’s already flashy crown.
Elden Ring is the stellar developer from FromSoftware, which represents more than a decade of iterations on the same solid core gameplay and interlocking mechanics system. The enchanting, beautiful, and captivating world of gaming came to a complete halt when Elden Ring was released back in February and will long live in our collective consciousness as a peerless open world epic.
