UEFA has imposed a fine of 14,500 euros (about 580,000 baht) on the Serbian Football Association for allowing fans to commit two violations at a match with a Serbian general. Lost to England 0-1 in the group stage of Euro 2024, the first match of Group C, on Sunday 16 June.
UEFA charged Serbia with two charges, the first being fans throwing objects on the pitch. The other charge was the presence of fans in the stands carrying banners carrying provocative political messages that were not appropriate for a sporting event.
“The Serbian Football Federation was fined 4,500 euros for throwing objects on the field and 10,000 euros for raising provocative banners inappropriate for a sporting event,” UEFA said in a statement.
The Serbian Football Federation filed a complaint with UEFA in the case of Croatian and Albanian football fans singing songs cheering the killing of Serbs. In the match, the two teams tied 2-2 last Wednesday, and Serbia threatened to withdraw if no penalty was awarded.
Bovan Zurbatovic, Secretary General of the Serbian Football Federation, said: “What happened is a scandal. We will ask UEFA to punish them, even if it means not continuing the competition. “We are sure they will be punished.”
Meanwhile, UEFA also imposed a fine of 37,375 euros (about 1.49 baht) from the Albanian Football Association for four violations in the 1-2 loss to Italy in the first match of the group stage, Group B, on Saturday, June 15.
