A severe tornado hit Arkansas
The city of Little Rock, Arkansas was hit by a “devastating tornado” on Friday. No report has yet been made by the authorities.
A violent tornado hit Little Rock, a large city in the southern U.S. state of Arkansas, on Friday, causing significant damage, according to officials.
“Extensive damage has occurred in central Arkansas,” Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders tweeted, declaring a state of emergency in her state. “I pray for those who were in the path of this storm,” he added.
Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott announced in a tweet that he had asked the governor for National Guard assistance after the “devastating tornado.” No casualties were immediately reported by authorities. UAMS University Hospital told AFP it had placed itself on level one alert, expecting to receive more victims.
It is difficult to predict
Rescuers are “difficult to reach people due to fallen trees,” a hospital spokeswoman said by phone. Videos shared by local journalists on social networks show a vast blackness tearing through the skies of this town of 200,000 citizens.
About 70,000 people in Arkansas are without power, according to the specialized site PowerOutage.us. The US Weather Service (NWS) had warned of an impending “major weather event” in the region hours earlier.
Tornadoes, an impressively unpredictable weather phenomenon, are common in the United States, especially in the center and south of the country. A week ago, a tornado swept through Mississippi, killing 25 people and causing massive property damage. President Joe Biden visited the site on Friday. As of December 2021, approximately 80 people have died from tornadoes that have hit Kentucky.
