Storm Italia formed in the Caribbean near Mexico
Many tourist destinations are now close to Tropical Storm Italia.
Tropical Storm Idalia formed on Sunday in the Caribbean Sea near southeastern Mexico, an area with major tourist attractions, and brought strong winds and rainfall, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.
At 6:00 pm GMT, Italia was 135 km east of the Mexican island of Cozumel, with sustained winds of 65 km/h and moving northward at 4 km/h, the NHC said. “A rapid northward movement is expected on Monday, bringing the storm to the eastern Gulf of Mexico,” he added.
An NHC map with a forecast of Italia’s track shows that it will not approach Mexican territory, but is expected to reach northwest Florida in the southeastern United States on Wednesday, where it will become a hurricane.
One week after Hurricane Hillary
In the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, home to Cancun and other resorts along the Mayan coast, this final weekend of the Italia summer vacation brought rain and cloudbursts that stymied tourists’ plans.
Mexico’s National Meteorological Center has warned of rain, wind and strong waves for the next few hours in this state and neighboring Yucatan and Campeche.
The previous weekend, Hurricane Hillary, a Category 4 out of 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale (winds of 210 to 250 km/h), struck the Mexican state of Baja California (northwest) on the Pacific coast, causing one fatality. Damaged infrastructure before entering US territory. Mexico is hit by hurricanes on its Pacific and Atlantic coasts every year, usually between May and November.
